Your secondary characters are still doing things even if your main character is self-centered and doesn’t know.
They are also changing. They have secrets they want to hide. They have disgusting things in their search history. They have plans and goals, even if those plans and goals don’t go against their main character.
What do they say without saying it? What do they try to hide? What does the main character fail to notice about them? Make their absence vast. They are still operating, scheming, learning, growing, shrinking, becoming more evil.
Your secondary characters are not the focus of the story, but they are still allowed an arc. Maybe by the end, they do something they would not have considered at the beginning. They share. They offer a small gesture. They stop sharing. They take it away.
They offer a cup of coffee. They stop offering. They start ironing their pants.
They’re changing and transforming, all the time, even though your main character may not see it…just like a caterpillar might be slowly munching on leaves as you stand underneath the shade of a tree.
