How To Write A Book: Turn The Screws

What would happen if everything were just a little bit worse for your character? A little less money? Rotten fruit, spilled milk? A lost key?

What would happen if everything were just a little bit worse–Missing clothes, wet socks, a transparent bathing suit? Maybe they’re in a romantic situation and can’t rise to the occasion; maybe they’re in a meeting squirming in their seat.

What if everything was just a little more terrible? A flight delay, a long light, a missing lotto ticket? Heavy ran, a battery that isn’t charged, pulling in to the gas station on the wrong side?

What if they typed their name incorrectly on an important form? Their glasses broke? They found out their birthday isn’t their real birthday, or that their father is not on their birth certificate?

What if they missed their bus? Forgot their water bottle? What if everything were just a bit worse?

Out of their favorite hair product?

What if their allergies flare up, or they discover a new one? What if the ice cream machine is broken? What if they find out their childhood pet was not really sent to a farm?
What if their favorite menu item is removed from the menu? What if they can’t register their business because someone else has the name? What if they’re late to yoga? What if preworkout makes their skin itchy?

Dirty dishes, crunchy pasta, freezer burned meat.

Missing earring, shrunken shirts, a new diagnosis.

Ringing ears, eye floaters, a lost phone.

What if everything could be just a teeny, tiny bit worse?
